Some weathering observation sites were set up at different height and face in Great Wall Station area of King Geroge Island, Antarctica, since 1989. Baced on the data series obtained from 1987-1991, the relationship between physical weathering of rock and season, heights, face are discussed in this paper. We also compare the results to that of other periglacial area in the world in order to know the special features of King George Island in physical weathering of rock.
The rock weathering in south-east face of sea stack is higher than that of north-west face in same environment. Get rid of influence of elevation, rock type, weathering time and organisms, the main reason which caused physical weathering of this area is climate and orientation of rock.
The King George Island of Antarctica belong to high latitude area. The temperature time of below zero is 6-8 months in a year, so the process of freeze-thow is restricted. Compared with other periglacial area in the world, the weathering rate of rock is middle in this area.
The chief aim of this study is to investigate the chemical weathering process of the weathering crust in Great Wall Station region of China (in Fildes Peninsula), Antarctica by the method of sedimentology.
CW, SW, GW, TW, WE weathering crusts developed on volcanic clastic rock, gray aptitic basalt with tuff or basaltic bedrock. On change of minerals, geochemical behaviors of elements, migration and enrichment regularities of elements, Correlation between element geochemical behaviors, change of weathering potential of rocks in chemical weathering process are studied by us.
We can see that the sequence fo weathering strengths of the abovementioned sections, from high to low, should reflected in TW, GW, CW and SWT and basical correspond with that calculated from the enrichment and differentiation indexes.
This paper deals with the mass movement processes on the Fildes Peniasula, King George Island. Based on numerous field investigation, the authors consider that the slope mass movement and periglacial form on the peninsula have an internal relationship in genesis, reflecting in there main aspects. 1, All patterns of mass movement are developed on the slope surface: 2, different - order mass movement and periglacial type show their space - time distribution rules (their development stages); 3, The slope mass movement are developed from the periglacio - geomorphic processes. More detailed works have been done, such as fixed reapeated surveying whose results are concord and with the typical characteristics above mentimed very well.
Field observing sites were set to measure frost weathering of bedrock in the Great Wall Station Area of Antarctica from 1988 to 1990. The results show that: (1), the weathering rate is higher in summer that in winter; (2), the weathering rate is greater at higher place than at lower place; (3), the weathering rate is higher in east and southeast slopes than in other slopes; (4), the weathering rate is greater in higher mean annual air temperature year than in lower year.
The Xihu Lake is Located on the southern Fildes Peninsula. A drill hole is 2. 6 m deep and total 102 samples were collected by Dr. Xie Youyu during 1985-1986. The samples from drill hole in the Xihu Lake contain abundant and well-preserved diatoms and Cysts (Chrysophata), 131 species and variaties of diatoms belonging to 21 genera were recognized. As a result of the detailed research on the diatom assemblages from the Xihu Lake sediments, 9 diatom assemblages were distinguished. From diatom and Cysts (Chrysophyta) data, the changes of the Palaeoenvironments and Palaeoclimate and their age are discussed.
After a field work on recently raised coastal features in South Shetland Islands, we conclude that there are three kinds of recent coastal features, i. e, fragmental coast, rock coast, and ice cliff coast. The processes and forms of the fragmental cost formed by wave action with floating ice are studied. Systematic study of the raised coasts enables us to distinguish two groups of the coasts by an elevation of 20 m a. s. l. The raised coasts above 20 m a. s. l. belong to older group and those below 20 m a. s. l. belong to younger group. Mean uplift rate of coast in this area is 6.7 mm/a.
The extension of ice sheet on King George Island during the last glaciation was an environment event since the last glaciation. At that time South Shedlands Islands were a large unified island and the ice mass on King George Island might come from the Antarctic Peninsula. The model of ice retreat and ice advance events in the Holocene show that the ice sheet was separated into three small ice caps and then dispeared gradually. At present the retreating velocity of glacier is about 1.3 m each year. After the retreat of ice sheet the isostatic compensation appeared in the crust there, and then 5-6 steps of the uplifted marine terraces have been developed along the coast. The uplift rate of the crust may be 6-10 mm/a.
